Questions To Ask Prospective Entertainment Company
(Before you ask “How
much do you charge?”)
1. Do
you have the date open?
Believe
it or not, many schools don’t even ask a prospective DJ
if they have a certain date available. As simple as this
question is, many schools only ask “How much?”. If
you want a successful dance, asking the cost should be
the LAST question to ask!
2.
How will you make our dance FUN?
Many DJ
services will tell you what they have or what they
bring, but that won’t make your dance FUN.
Ask them, “What will you do to make our dance
successful?” Also ask them, “How do you plan to motivate
our crowd?” If you want a successful dance, you have to
find out what company will be the BEST for your event,
not which company is the least expensive.

Where do you get your music from?
Did you know it is ILLEGAL for DJ’s to download music
from a FREE online service? DJ services have been sued in the past by the
recording industry for this practice!! Make sure that
the DJ service you select is using LEGAL music, or they
may be out of business when the date of your dance
arrives.

What type of insurance do you carry?
Believe
it or not, MANY DJ companies do not carry insurance.
What happens if someone gets hurt at your dance because
of what the DJ did? What happens if the DJ’s equipment
malfunctions during YOUR event? That’s why it’s

to
select a DJ that carries proof of insurance.

What type of events do you specialize in?
Some
DJ’s do not “specialize” in school events. Some are
great for certain events, such as anniversaries, but may
not be the best choice for a school dance. Do you want a
DJ at your dance that does not specialize in school
events? Also, ask them how many school events they
generally perform at each year.

7. How
many years of experience at school events do you have?
Many DJ
services respond to this question by saying, “We have
been in business for 20 years.” This is a great
accomplishment, but that doesn’t help you. They may have
been in business for 20 years, but the DJ that performs
at YOUR event may only have 3 weeks of experience. Do you want to put the success of your event in the
hands of someone with only 3 WEEKS of experience? I know I wouldn’t!

8.
Finally, How Much Do You Charge For Our Event?
Again,
this should be the LAST question you ask if you want
your event to be a success. There are many price ranges
for DJ’s. The general rule is this... if you are
planning on investing less than $800 for your
entertainment (for a Saturday event),
than don’t be surprised if you are disappointed!
If you were to simply RENT the equipment, it
would cost AT LEAST $500. What does that say
about a DJ that charges LESS than the normal cost of
rental?
If
your event is a failure, it is most likely the result of
a cheap DJ!!
